Coasting

Rockport to Gloucester, Cape Ann, Massachusetts

By train to Rockport... by foot to Gloucester... then jump the train back to Boston...
... and THIS I call Freedom from cars...

Cape Ann: ... Rockport blooms...

Cape Ann: ... and rocks...

Cape Ann: ... low...

Cape Ann: ... intertidal coloring...

Cape Ann: ... living between the tides...

Cape Ann: ... comes... and goes...

Cape Ann: ... finds a way...

Cape Ann: ... in perfect harmony...

Cape Ann: ... with impenetrable...

Cape Ann: ... yet rolling... to shapes...

Cape Ann: ... and spreading...

Cape Ann: ... by the ocean...

Cape Ann: ... expansive and limitless...

Cape Ann: ... intertidal pools...

Cape Ann: ... in wet and dry...

Cape Ann: ... wiggling...

Cape Ann: ... Thacher Island... over there...

Cape Ann: ... Pebble Beach... the ocean coming closer...

Cape Ann: ... and seagulls too...

Cape Ann: ... sand and ocean... playfully together...

Cape Ann: ... ad infinitum...

Cape Ann: ... in Gloucester... waiting for the supper...

Power of Renewal

Halibut Point State Park, Cape Ann, Massachusetts

The Quarry is central to the Park... the point where humans dug out these dense rocks we call granite... born 440 million years ago, deep in the Earth's crust during the cooling of molten rock... and then pushed to the surface by turbulent powers of uplifting and erosion... their colors and crystals revealed, sparkling in the sunlight... and inspiring human appetites...

Digging began right around 1840... making the place an industrial nightmare... with tools, sounds and sweat... in stubborn attempts to conquer nature... until they called it quits some 100 years later...

Today, tranquility of a lake... seagulls taking a pause... and granite wounds healing... Nature is back...

Halibut Point: ... the quarry today...

Halibut Point: ... transmits tranquility of a lake...

Halibut Point: ... with granite wounds healing...

Halibut Point: ... and seagulls...

Halibut Point: ... taking a pause...

Halibut Point: ... reflective past overflowed with green...

Halibut Point: ... the pile of wasted granite dumped here over years...

Halibut Point: ... on top of the pile...

Halibut Point: ... humans against granite...

Halibut Point: ... with granite...

Halibut Point: ... ocean...

Halibut Point: ... and granite...

Halibut Point: ... coming together...

Halibut Point: ... ways to be with...

Halibut Point: ... waves...

Halibut Point: ... and seagulls...

Halibut Point: ... coming together...

Aquarelle Reflections

Mass Audubon Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, Massachusetts

Drain the swamp... can be heard these days around each corner... the slogan humans like to use without thinking about its true meaning... the wording goes well back in human history... and deeds indeed... we have always been intimidated by our inability to habituate swamps... these pieces of wilderness that simply won't let go... unless we drain and kill them...

... water lilies blooming... little turtle resting... aquarelle reflections... of being alive...

Ipswich River: ... blooming... in whites...

Ipswich River: ... and pinks...

Ipswich River: ... greens... dancing...

Ipswich River: ... in layers...

Ipswich River: ... pollen tints dusting...

Ipswich River: ... in repose...

Ipswich River: ... aquarelle reflections... of being alive...

From Leaf to Leaf

Mass Audubon Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, Massachusetts

Water Lilies stretch to distance... covering dancing surface of Bunker Meadows...
There... a bird... strolling from leaf to leaf...
Binoculars bring me closer...
I can see the motion of leaves as she jumps from one and lands on another...
And the water responds in ripples...
Looks under the leaf...
At some moments it is a step... at others hop, hop... with a little help from wings...
And the leaves are rolling along...

Ipswich River: ... water lilies stretch to distance... there... a bird...

Ipswich River: ... strolling from leaf to leaf...

Ipswich River: ... looks under...

Ipswich River: ... hop...

Ipswich River: ... with a little help from wings...

Ipswich River: ... rolling along...

Breakheart

Breakheart Reservation, Massachusetts

The first time I've heard of the Park is from two ladies we have met on Fells... Breakheart... a strange name for a park. The legend says that the  Civil War soldiers training in the area found it "lonely and remote" thus breaking their hearts... This, certainly, is a good reason for a visit...

Breakheart: ... the trail...

Breakheart: ... losing itself...

Breakheart: ... and then... Silver Lake appears...

Breakheart: ... masterfully...

Breakheart: ... dammed by humans who wished for a lake...

Breakheart: ... without hurting nature...

Breakheart: ... just like beavers...

Breakheart: ... unexpected...

Breakheart: ... virtuoso weaves...

Breakheart: ... life on the rocks...

Breakheart: ... approaching...

Breakheart: ... the highest of the peaks...

Breakheart: ... with Boston on the horizon...

Breakheart: ... off the trail...

Breakheart: ... into the green land...

Breakheart: ... with points...

Breakheart: ... and mementos...

Just Blow

Fresh Pond, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Dandelions... I love to see them on spring meadows... sprinkles of yellows over greens... and when the time comes... cloudy balls of tiny seeds... I remember, as a child, when we kids enjoyed blowing into these balls and watching the seeds fly off to the air...with smiles... not knowing that this was exactly what these tiny seeds were waiting for...

Fresh Pond: ... just blow...
