Low Tide

Jeremy Point, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Glossy sand, in streams and puddles, and the life left behind.
The sea has reached the low point.

Jeremy Point: ... low tide...

To Jeremy Point

Great Island Trail, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Low tide, no wind, sunny...
Perfect time to visit Jeremy Point,
     the illusive point on Earth
that appears and disappears in the rhythm of motions the sea knows very well.

And just to stand on this point, I have to obey nature and be on time...

Great Island: ... in the breaths of tides...

Great Island: ... over strip of sand...

Great Island: ... and autumnal colorings...

Great Island: ... onto the wooded island...

Great Island: ... with grassy threads of light...

Great Island: ... living sparkles...

Great Island: ... following...

Great Island: ... just about...

Great Island: ... along the marsh plain...

Great Island: ... and the glitter...

Great Island: ... to Great Beach Hill...

Great Island: ... the world of sculpted pitch pines...

Great Island: ... and then...

Great Island: ... the world sculpted by tides...

Great Island: ... the sea on the left, the sea on the right...

Great Island: ... the shells under my boots...

Great Island: ... and the Point, just on time...

Defined by the Sea

Marconi Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Age by age, the sea here gives battle to the land;
age by age, the earth struggles for her own,
calling to her defence her energies and her creations,
bidding her plants steal down upon the beach, and
holding the frontier sands in a net of grass and roots which the storms wash free.

The great rhythms of nature... have here their spacious and primeval liberty;

Marconi Beach: ... where the clouds ramble freely...

Marconi Beach: ... and the sea comes close...

Marconi Beach: ... shaping the character...

Marconi Beach: ... with sheer power...

Marconi Beach: ... while the land musters all her energies...

Marconi Beach: ... in response...

Marconi Beach: ... I wonder...

Marconi Beach: ... about these slipping sands...

Marconi Beach: ... and trees...

Marconi Beach: ... holding on...

Marconi Beach: ... until the last wave...

Through the Waves

Nauset Light Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Early light dusts the trees, grasses, and sandy cliffs in orange yellows,
the clouds of dewdrops are rising in the interspaces...

With the lasting sound of waves, unrolling over glossy surfaces...

Nauset Light: ... early light...

Nauset Light: ... dusts grasses...

Nauset Light: ... in orange yellows...

Nauset Light: ... through the waves...

Nauset Light: ... faces...

Nauset Light: ... trees...

Nauset Light: ... lasting sounds...

Nauset Light: ... and rising clouds of dewdrops...

Early Light

Nauset Light Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

When all has been said,
the adventure of the sun is the great natural drama by which we live,
and not to have joy in it and awe of it,
not to share in it,
is to close a dull door on nature's sustaining and poetic spirit.

Nauset Light: ... for the Sun...

Nauset Light: ... to spill over the energy of life...

Coming...

Castle Neck, The Crane Estate, Massachusetts

October is the month when we, humans, take to heart the leaves,
see their forms, colors, and feel the warmth of their shine.

Each one with the other in the glowing symphony we call Autumn...

Castle Neck: ... painted dunes...

Castle Neck: ... in autumnal heart and vigor...

Castle Neck: ... shining...

Castle Neck: ... together, the pine does not mind...

Castle Neck: ... the fire...

Castle Neck: ... and Hudsonia does not either...

Castle Neck: ... each one with the other...

Castle Neck: ... in the glowing symphony we call Autumn...

What I am I am

Fresh Pond, Cambridge, Massachusetts
My prickles or smoothness are as much a quality of your hand as of myself.
I cannot tell you what I am, more than a ray of the summer's sun.
What I am I am, and say not. Being is the great explainer.

HENRY D. THOREAU, Journals, February 26, 1841
