Hiking North Head

Grand Manan, Bay of Fundy, Canada

The trail is edging the Ocean along North Head...
... winding through grasses, flowers, ferns and trees... yet close to the bluffs... tumbling...
... in some instants just few steps away...
... makes me uneasy...

... and then I see a seal... and smile...

North Head: ... winding through grasses...

North Head: ... yet close to the bluffs...

North Head: ... tumbling...

North Head: ... makes me uneasy...

North Head: ... and then I see her... and smile...

North Head: ... the trail goes on...

North Head: ... passing by those curious onlookers...

North Head: ... stopping for a moment...

North Head: ... happily...

North Head: ... being here...

North Head: ... among rocks...

North Head: ... brightly...

North Head: ... among trees...

North Head: ... and onto the bluffs...

North Head: ... far, far...

North Head: ...

North Head: ... among grasses...

North Head: ... and the trail goes on...

North Head: ... by the ocean...

North Head: ... and the woods...

North Head: ... by the flowers...

North Head: ... and into infinity...

On the Water

Grand Manan, Bay of Fundy, Canada

Here we are, on the ferry to Grand Manan...
... an island at the mouth of Bay of Fundy known for whales, birds, bluffs...
... and dynamics of nature propelled by great break in Earth's crust, glaciers, and high tides...

... the ocean is blue... and these clouds ... yes, this is about water...

Grand Manan: ... here we are...

Grand Manan: ... on the ferry to Grand Manan...

Grand Manan: ... these clouds...

Grand Manan: ... flying...

Grand Manan: ... blowing...

Grand Manan: ... blueness...

Grand Manan: ... yes, this is about water...

Chocolate River

Hopewell Rocks, Bay of Fundy, Canada

Hopewell Rocks is the point to observe striking Bay of Fundy tides and the effects they have on the land edging the Ocean. Chocolate River, as the Ocean is popularly called here for her color and her flow, moves billions tonnes of water against the shore everyday...
... advancing and retreating on the planetary timeline...
... sculpting the coast over many millennia...
      ... and in this moment...

Hopewell Rocks: ... the tides and the land...

Hopewell Rocks: ... up-close...

Hopewell Rocks: ... the point to see and feel...

Hopewell Rocks: ... seaweeds... waiting for the ocean...

Hopewell Rocks: ... the water, finally...

Hopewell Rocks: ... in motion...

Hopewell Rocks: ... on planetary timeline...

Hopewell Rocks: ... and in this moment...

Hopewell Rocks: ... the color... connects...

Hopewell Rocks: ... the form... connects...

Hopewell Rocks: ... with the ocean...

Hopewell Rocks: ... and the land...

Hopewell Rocks: ... flowing chocolate...

Hopewell Rocks: ... connects...

Out of this World

Johnson's Mills Shorebird Reserve, Bay of Fundy, Canada

Bay of Fundy is a special place... with the world's largest tides, up to 14 meters...

We have just arrived on the shores of the Reserve -
the stopover for thousands of sandpipers on their migration to South America. Birds stop here for food and there is plenty in the tidal mudflats. So much so that they double their weight in just three weeks, before resuming non-stop flight to the South.

It is low tide... the mudflats extend far into distance...
... the Ocean is compressed to a thin line on the horizon and birds are scattered all over the surface...
... with hours passing, the thin line gets thicker and birds come closer...
... hundreds... perhaps thousands...
... overflying the area in unison exhibits... so airy, vivid, joyful... without worry about the long flight...

After full six hours, the ocean reaches the coast...
... the flat is wavy... and birds are coasting just to stretch their wings...

... until the next low tide...

Johnson's Mills: ... stepping onto the shores of the reserve...

Johnson's Mills: ... low tide...

Johnson's Mills: ... mudflats extend far into distance...

Johnson's Mills: ... birds are scattered all over the surface...

Johnson's Mills: ... with plenty of food...

Johnson's Mills: ... they glide from spot to spot...

Johnson's Mills: ... twisting and turning...

Johnson's Mills: ... joyfully...

Johnson's Mills: ... and up into the air...

Johnson's Mills: ... high above...

Johnson's Mills: ... the intertidal world...

Johnson's Mills: ... where I can see a bunch of grass... happily growing...

Johnson's Mills: ... on this metallic feeding ground...

Johnson's Mills: ... with hours passing, the clouds and the ocean get closer...

Johnson's Mills: ... and closer...

Johnson's Mills: ... the flat is wavy...

Johnson's Mills: ... and birds are taking a retreat...

Johnson's Mills: ... taking off from time to time...

Johnson's Mills: ... just to stretch their wings...

Johnson's Mills: ... until the next low tide...

Johnson's Mills: ... !!! ...
