Into the Spring

Charles W. Ward Reservation, Massachusetts

Today is the first day of spring.
The day when the Sun's rays shine on the Earth's equator at 90 degrees
and when the day equals the night.
This is why it is called the equinox from Latin aequus+nox which means equal night.

Physics and math behind the name do not mean much to nature.
Woodlands are still quiet, no leaves, no flowers, no insects,

   but the burble of streams,
released from the freeze and lush with water, cheering for the spring...

Ward: ... first day of spring...
